IWU's Athletic Training Program Accredited Indiana Wesleyan University's athletic training education program has received its initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. About 30 IWU students currently are studying to become certified athletic trainers. IWU's athletic training program began in 1988 with two students and one part-time certified athletic trainer. The program offered a 32 credit-hour minor. The program was converted to a 45 credit-hour major at the beginning of the 1994-95 school year. The athletic training program officially became a candidate for accreditation in October 2000, and a self-study of the program was completed in May 2002. The final step in the process was a campus visit by an accrediting team late last year. WU received official word April 15 that the program had been accredited. Linda Sommers, a certified athletic trainer who joined the IWU faculty six years ago, is the Director of Athletic Training Education. The other faculty members, all of whom are certified athletic trainers, are Adam Thompson, Aly Williams and Steve Woof. The athletic training program draws its clinical instructors from area health-care facilities and athletic departments. Clinical instructors include Michele Renaud, Marion General Hospital; Heidi Zimmerman, Marion High School; Ryan Fagan, Oak Hill High School; Chad Robertson, Alexandria High School and Central Indiana Orthopedics; Dawn Castro, IWU; and Jeff Marsee and Eric Hayes, both from Taylor University. |
