Upward Bound
IWU has created a special program that prepares high school
students who likely would not be going on to college for college
life. Since the programs inception, students from Blackford,
Kokomo, Madison-Grant, Marion, Mississinewa, and Wabash school
districts have participated.
Upward Bound is a pre-college preparatory program that is
federally funded. It has been a part of IWU’s service
to its community since 1996. The program assists local students
who will become the first generation in their family to attend
college by providing them with academic support, personal
counseling, and cultural enrichment.
Upward Bound has three components. The Academic Year and
Summer components are open to all participants. The Bridge
Component is offered to seniors.
The Academic Year Component includes;
- weekly tutoring and study session
- cultural and educational trips, such as visits to other
university campuses, museums or attendance at concerts
- twice-monthly meetings at IWU where academic instruction,
testing, guest lectures, and recreation take place
The Summer Component involves a six-week residence on the IWU
campus. During this time students learn what living on a college
campus is like while taking morning classes in Math, Science,
and English. In the afternoon students get to choose from electives
such as Drama, Computer Fundamentals, Job Shadowing, Spanish
for Fun, Goal Setting, Decision Making, etc. Upward Bound students
also take trips to other universities and a large metropolitan
city such as Chicago or Cincinnati.
The Bridge Component, which takes place concurrently with
the Summer Component on IWU’s campus, is optional for
graduating seniors. Participates enjoy the Upward Bound experience
one last time while earning up to six hours of transferable
college credit at Indiana Wesleyan University.
“Our goal is that all Upward Bound students will one
day be in college,” said Dawn Greene, assistant director
of Upward Bound. “We want to support them so they can
reach that goal.”
