The Academic Structure of IWU

As the breadth and diversity of IWU’s academic programs have grown, IWU has organized the licensure and degree programs it offers into three colleges: the College of Arts & Science (traditional four-year liberal arts education), the College of Graduate Studies (traditional semester-based graduate degrees) and the College of Adult & Professional Studies (non-traditional, accelerated programs for working adults).

College of Adult & Professional Studies

The programs offered by the College of Adult & Professional Studies (CAPS) came about as a result of a decision in 1983 to begin offering business degrees in the evenings to working adults. CAPS began offering classes in 1985, and in less than 20 years it has become the premier college for working adults across Indiana and beyond. National publications now cite IWU’s adult programs as one the best in the nation.

After 22 years, IWU's adult programs have rapidly expanded to nearly 11,000 students. Classes meet at various sites- including 14 regional campuses- in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

The CAPS classes are taught in an accelerated format, allowing adults to complete their program in the shortest time possible. CAPS programs are taught in a lock-step or cohort method, which means students move through the program as a group, providing them with a support system while they study and learn together. In the cohort model, students take only one class at a time, with each class session meeting one time per week, typically for four hours. In this way students complete a standard course in three to six weeks. Small groups of student are encouraged to meet independently once per week.
