Both the Indiana Wesleyan men's and women's basketball teams claimed the No. 1-ranking in the first edition of the NAIA Division II Men's and Women's Coaches' Top-25 Polls which were released by the association Monday night.

The men take over the top spot in the poll for the first time in program history while the women claim the No. 1 rank for the first time since 2006-07 when Indiana Wesleyan was ranked first all season long en route to the national championship and a 38-0 record.

Indiana Wesleyan becomes the first school in 11 years to have the No. 1-ranking in both the NAIA Division II basketball polls. University of Saint Francis (Ind.) was the last to do it during the 1999-2000 season. The USF women were the top team all season long while the Cougar men were No. 1 for the final two polls of the season.

Both Wildcat teams are 7-0 to open this season and have impressive victories under their belts.

The IWU men already have a pair of top-10 victories. Indiana Wesleyan defeated then No. 4-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) University 100-93 in overtime on November 5 and then defeated No. 6-ranked and defending national champion Cornerstone (Mich.) University 91-89 in overtime on November 11. Indiana Wesleyan also defeated Union (Ky.) College 94-70 and Marian (Ind.) University 75-58, with both teams receiving votes in the poll.

The Wildcat women also have a pair of top-25 victories this season and two wins against teams receiving votes. IWU finished off NAIA DI No. 16-ranked Xavier (La.) University 59-45 on November 11 and then demolished No. 14-ranked Cornerstone 70-41 on November 19. The Wildcats also cruised to a pair of wins over teams just outside the top-25 with a 97-43 thrashing of NAIA DI Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) University and then trounced Marian 79-49 in the conference opener.

Indiana Wesleyan captured 7-of-14 first place votes in the men's poll for 367 points. Former No. 1-ranked Northwood (Fla.) University is second with five first place votes and 358 points while Davenport (Mich.) University is third with the final two first place votes and 357 points.

The Wildcats are the unanimous No. 1-ranked team in the women's poll. IWU earned all 14 first place votes for 374 points. Briar Cliff (Iowa) University is second with 352 points and College of the Ozarks (Mo.) ranks third at 351 points.

Both teams will be challenged in their first game since being named No. 1 this week. The men travel to Winona Lake and battle No. 4-ranked Grace (Ind.) College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The women host No. 20-ranked Grace at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Luckey Arena.

Be sure to visit iwuwildcats.com on Tuesday as men's head coach Greg Tonagel and women's head coach Steve Brooks share their thoughts on the No. 1-ranking.
