Faculty

Whether right out of grad school or after some years in the profession, IWU professors moved to the head of the class. Was it a passion for sharing the field of their dreams? Was it a divine prompting to make students their business? Or were they looking for a place where they could teach their profession and still share a profession of faith? No doubt it was all of the above. We invite you to come to campus and ask students what they think.

Melvin Royer; MS, PhD Assoc Prof; Mathematics | Chair; Div of Math, Comp & Info Sciences melvin.royer@indwes.edu Department - Mathematics Division - Math & Computer Science

Biography

Dr. Royer joined the faculty at Indiana Wesleyan in 2001 and is excited to be involved in a deeply Christ-centered university. He has taught Mathematics at community and technical colleges as well as at the university level. Dr. Royer's career interests include mathematical analysis, differential equations, electrical systems engineering, and post-secondary mathematics education. He has a strong personal interest in volunteer teaching of English in Asia.

Educational Background:

  • B.S., 1988, Purdue University
  • M.S., 1989, Purdue University
  • Ph.D., 1997, Purdue University

Interests

Dr. Royer's scholarship has mostly consisted of mathematics education presentations at conferences. He is also interested in forming an undergraduate research team to study chaos and dynamical systems. Some mathematical systems behave like a ball balanced motionless atop a hill; slightly different perturbations cause dramatically different effects. Predicting which systems will exhibit this chaotic behavior is a challenging topic approachable at many different levels.
