Dr. Wayne Schmidt
Vice President for Wesley Seminary
After serving on the Kentwood Community Church (KCC) pastoral staff
since 1979, Dr. Wayne Schmidt started as Vice President of Wesley
Seminary at IWU in January 2010.
Ministerial and Professional Background
From 1979-1981, Pastor Wayne Schmidt helped plant Kentwood Community
Church (KCC) under founding pastor Dick Wynn, becoming senior pastor in
1981. Over the years KCC developed into one of the flagship churches in
the Wesleyan denomination, becoming increasingly multiethnic as it
reached the increasingly diverse greater Grand Rapids, MI. KCC grew to
more than 2,600 attendees each weekend while planting 10 other churches
with many unique approaches to ministry.
Dr. Schmidt has addressed churches and conferences around the globe and
in nearly every district of The Wesleyan Church. He has served as a
General Conference delegate four times and has worked closely with the
Department of Evangelism & Church Growth in strategy development and
vision casting for the promotion of church planting, parenting and
He has taught as an adjunct professor at Indiana Wesleyan University
(IWU) and Bethany Bible College (now Kingswood University). In January
of 2010 he became the first Vice-President for the newly formed Wesley
Seminary at IWU, providing strategic and operational leadership in
shaping a revolutionary way to prepare ministers.
Wayne has been married to Jan
since 1978, and they’ve been blessed with their children Chris (Leila),
Jordan and Elise (Taylor), and granddaughters Amelia and Gabrielle (the
reason they make frequent trips back to Grand Rapids). Blessed with the
same accountability partner for over 25 years, Wayne enjoys a
well-rounded life with a diversity of interests and activities. His
life mission statement is “equipping leaders and creating contexts for
multiplying disciples, gatherings and churches.”
