COLLEGE OF
ARTS AND SCIENCES EXPERIENCE
The College of Arts and Sciences creates a world changing
experience that is a REAL
educational experience:
Responsive! First and
foremost, IWU is committed to remaining responsive to God.
Through prayer, Bible study and worship, the IWU community
seeks to be led by God. Our commitment to Him produces a call
to be responsive to others. In this day of rapid change, Christian
higher education must be responsive to our changing world.
Through technology, research and connections, IWU seeks to
hear and understand the needs of each other and our world.
This awareness then becomes a call to bring change through
engagement.
Engaged! It is the goal
of IWU to facilitate learning in such a way that students
learn to be engaged in their world. Over the last two years,
students participating in a required freshman course helped
to construct four houses in our community in cooperation with
Habitat for Humanity. IWU students started a program in the
community, working in conjunction with the local YMCA, to
get community children off the streets on the weekend. In
conjunction with the CAPE grant, Marion hopes to become the
first county in Indiana to have Kids Hope in every elementary
school system.
Active! IWU students
must be active learners to succeed. Learning experiences in
and outside the classroom are designed to involve the whole
person. Students join with faculty in the learning process.
In the last three years, Psychology students have taken top
honors at the national Christian Association of Psychological
Services (CAPS) for student research.
Learning Centered! At
IWU, teaching is the interaction between a teacher and students
such that learning occurs on the part of the students. Teaching
must 1) provide students an opportunity to learn; 2) create
an environment that facilitates learning; and 3)use techniques
and methods that maximizes the possibility that learning will
occur. There is no real instruction unless learning has occurred.
At IWU, faculty must be committed to this relationship.
