Q. How many times has a U.S. President been impeached?

A. Twice. Andrew Johnson was impeached for his handling of post-Civil War matters, but he was acquitted by one vote. Bill Clinton was impeached for personal misconduct; he was acquitted by the the Senate impeachment trial although he admitted to committing perjury, which was the basis of the case against him. Due to severe disagreements over states' rights versus federal power, a resoluton to impeach John Tyler was introduced in Congress, but the resolution did not pass. Some felt that Richard Nixon deserved impeachment for abuse of powers of office, but his resignation ended the matter before any action was taken by the full House of Representatives on impeachment.
