Title: Learning through online video
Description: Students frequently watch online videos. For example, if a student needs to learn about fractions, s/he can watch a Khan Academy video to learn more about fractions. However, we are unsure how much one may learn from watching these types of videos. The purpose of this study is to examine the overall impact on the effectiveness of learning from watching educational videos online.
Title: Learning through prompted-experiences in online interfaces
Description: More and more students use computer interfaces for learning, and online material is frequently presented in a variety of ways. We are interested in identifying ways to maximize online learning. Specifically, our research explores how unique online interfaces influence reading and learning.
Title: Statistics theater
Description: Often students learn the procedural or computation end of statistics, but struggle to grasp the larger concepts. By asking students to create videos using scripts written by the instructor, students will have to think about the interpretation of the concepts and how to best visualize/teach those concepts to other students. The purpose of the proposed research is to study the effects of performing scripts describing statistics concepts and the rating of those video performances on the learning of statistics.
Title: Connecting concepts and activities:
Principles of integration in mathematical pedagogy
Description: Students often become confused when different types of math problems are intermixed. Additionally, students have difficulty generalizing what they have learned to new situations (flexible reasoning). We are interested in understanding how to help students develop generalization and flexible reasoning.
Title: Learning and note taking
Description: Students and teachers actively use computers in classrooms, and many times computers are used for note-taking. However, research has yet to explore the relationship between learning and using a computer to take notes. Our research investigates the intersection of learning and taking notes using a computer.
Title: Wheel of participation
Description: Teachers often call on the same set of students in a class. The wheel of participation provides facilitators a way to ensure that all students have an equal chance to participate. Out research explores how the wheel influences overall participation and learning.
Title: Mobile English language learning
Description: The ability to speak English in Chile opens up many opportunities. For example, one who can speak fluent English has the potential to earn as much as a University graduate. Our goal is to explore how to encourage English language learning using flexible Internet access and mobile technology. Specifically, we are interested in self-directed asynchronous learning.
Title: Overall health of transfer students
Description: Our research explores the general health of transfer students. Students completed a health survey, which provided us a better understanding of how to accommodate their unique needs. Ultimately, we hope to provide a set of recommendations to help transfer students successfully adapt to their new environment.
