Spreading the Word: The Joann Yang Story

    Burroughs Thumbnail

Joann Yang’s career—and her travel schedule—took off immediately after she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing degree at Indiana Wesleyan University.

“During every trip I take to Asia, I am educating students by the hundreds; sometimes 500 or even 1,000 attend the sessions,” Yang said. As an intravenous infusion clinical specialist, she does live demos at hospitals, for the development of entrance-level and advanced-level nurses.

Joann was born in China and raised in the Christian faith. As an American citizen of Asian descent, she is concerned that Third World nurses often aren’t respected. “I tell them not to underestimate themselves, which makes them feel good and me feel good.” Yang is proud to make an impact by representing IWU and by representing the nursing profession in the United States. She said, “I constantly remember where I came from and who got me here, and I thank God that I am able to serve his people.”

Joann chose IWU because the adult nursing program was doable and flexible. It fit her work and life, and the curriculum helped her to look at the well-being of individuals as whole people and to fully understand patients instead of just dealing with a symptom or a diagnosis. She felt profoundly impacted from the first day of class, realizing that what she was preparing to do could be so meaningful – “maybe not drastically, but every day, in every little thing I put my whole effort into. I am a foreign-born student; if I can do it, anyone can, if your determination is there and you really want it. Go for it! It’s a great choice, and well worth the time and effort. I have absolutely no regrets.”

Joann Yang used her degree to teach nursing skills internationally. Find out more about how Indiana Wesleyan University’s Nursing Programs can prepare you for service in venues ranging from hospitals to the mission field.
