Architecture and interior design were Sondra Copanas’ career for 10 years before she paused to raise her children.
When Copanas and her husband purchased a 75-year-old manufacturing business, she felt the need to be better equipped in business management. “My husband already had his MBA, and I wanted to be prepared for the future,” she said. She chose Indiana Wesleyan University because of the Cincinnati Education Center’s convenient location near their home, and because some class work would be done online.
IWU proved to be a good fit for Sondra’s family members to further their education as well. “We wanted to prepare the next generation for leadership,” she said. “Two of our three daughters are involved in the business, as well as our son-in-law. We all did it together; my two daughters and son-in-law enrolled with me.” Designating themselves as “Team 4” based off of an early assignment, they completed 11 courses in two years. “Because of our mission of continuing to build our business, all of our class projects were built around our company. We wrote our mission statement and business principles during Law and Ethics class, and our capstone projects developed our estate plans for the future of our business."
Sondra enjoyed the Christian foundation she found at IWU, and that her family members also appreciated that aspect. “It was very enriching,” she said. “My two daughters got to see me differently, and we could all see the benefits of team building for our company.”
“Team 4” prepared Sondra Copanas to advance the family business. Find out more about how Indiana Wesleyan University’s Business Programs can strengthen your own business skills.
