Dr. Joy Tong joined the university in 2011 from Purdue University where she was a postdoctoral research associate at the Center on Religion and Chinese Society, with affiliation with the Department of Sociology.

She graduated from Taiwan Chengchi University and Singapore Bible College and obtained her Ph.D. in Sociology from the National University of Singapore in 2009, under the supervision of Prof. Bryan S. Turner. While at Purdue, she worked with Prof. Fenggang Yang on research related to religion in China and the U.S.

Her research activities focus on sociology of religion in China, Southeast Asia and the U.S., including faith and entrepreneurship, Business as Mission, megachurches, Chinese Charismatic movement, media, and Islam in Southeast Asia. Her book on Overseas Chinese Christian Entrepreneurs in China was published by Anthem Press in February 2012.
